A great day for this science fiction detective story: launch party pics and videos

Launch Party for the The Social Club, a novel by science fiction dark fantasy author David J Rodger

Saturday a bright, beautifully sunny but ice-cold November afternoon in England. Step into the comfortable warmth of the Shakespeare Tavern, next door to the Arnolfini Centre for Contemporary Arts in Bristol. It’s a regular haunt for the Bristol Fantasy and Science Fiction Society, and it’s where they have arranged the launch party for my eighth novel: The Social Club.

What it’s all about…

Wonderful day. Great mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Lots of mingling took place. Felt like a proper party.   My thanks go to Jo Hall and Claire M Hutt from the SF Society for putting it all together. All I had to do was rock up with a stack of books and talk. Thanks to everyone who came and made the event so positive and friendly. I really enjoyed myself, and if you were there, I hope you did too.

I read the first chapter of the book then did some Q+A, followed by signing.  It’s the first time I’ve had a line of people queuing up for me to scribble some words inside the cover. Nice feeling. Very rewarding, if not rather surreal.  Dave Bradley, editor in chief for SFX magazine very kindly came along too; the video (below) includes one of his questions about the book.

Routes to Publication and General Chin-Wagging

It’s been a couple of weeks since BristolCon and I’m still enjoying the push that going there gave to me, like riding the outer edges of the wake as the energy of the event slowly dissipates.  I’ve been super creative since going.  BristolCon was put together by the energetic crew of the Bristol Fantasy and Science Fiction Society, and it was a spectacularly well-organised event.  The meet-and-greet I received as a panel participant; the layout of the syndicate rooms; the cordial and efficient manner of the staff who were there to keep panels running to time and motivating interesting debate. I was particularly struck how relaxed and friendly everyone was, from participants to punters.  Really, really good fun. Especially the bar area as things began to wrap up.   I’ll certainly be there again next year.

I was invited to sit on a panel about “Routes to Publication”. There were five of us.
