I paid £14 for a turkey sandwich, slice of pecan pie and a home projector showing of a movie I saw at the cinema in 1989…
And I would do it again tomorrow. This was one of the most enjoyable cinema experiences I’ve ever had. A real social event.
Thursday night. Bristol. Food. Cinema. A combination brought together by Tim Popple founder and organiser of the Cannoli & Gunn events. He’s only been up and running for 4 months but it was a full house, packed out with people who were old enough to remember this movie at the cinema (1989) and folks young enough not to have been born back then.
This gig was being hosted by the City Deli Bristol, tucked away on a corner of Victoria street it caters to the large number of businesses in the area leading from Temple Meads into the city. They did a really good job of coping and hosting such a large number of people in an unusual format. City Deli is a place that is off my usual circuit, in fact I didn’t even know it existed until last night – and this makes the Cannoli & Gun event even more pleasing because it has introduced me to a new treat for food. The City Deli have a special on their board: Mac & Cheese. If you know me you’ll know I’ll travel to the ends of the Earth for good Mac & Cheese. So, we shall have to see! Watch this space for a food report.
The atmosphere really made the viewing of the movie a very special experience. Easy conversation and smiles between strangers before the film started. A lot of shared laughter during. The movie is shown on a simple small projector screen (has to be portable for Tim Popple to lug around) but the sound is excellent.
As for the movie itself. I’ve not seen When Harry Met Sally since it came out in 1989. I had forgotten a lot about it and especially how good it is. Definitely one to add to the list if you’ve not seen it for a while – or at all.
So, for September, I have already booked tickets to watch Martin Scorsese’s gangster classic Goodfellas (1990) at Vincenzo’s on Park Street, served with spaghetti and meatballs. I cannot wait! Rarely does a social event make me this excited 2 months in advance. Well done Cannoli & Gun. Well done Tim Popple.
