Personal blog: when friends read your work, or choose not to

¦ dialling in from the harbourside ¦

Interesting phone call with a mate today. He lives up North – where I grew up – and is somebody I’ve known since we were both 5 years old. It’s a miracle he’s still alive. Quite a journey through existence – so much so that he’s putting down notes for a book about his life which I’m going to write (next year?).  Anyway he said something recently that I’ve heard from other friends: “I didn’t want to read your work in case I didn’t like it.”

I can relate to it. He, like others, have seen me go through the struggles of writing and admire my passion for it – but what if it’s all for nothing?

Their thought loop: What if my mate’s work is shit!?!

Shattered illusions and all that jazz. Awkward conversations forevermore…

This friend has just read all 9 of my novels back to back.  I started getting text messages telling me he’s getting up extra early to read before going to work.  But today’s phone call really made me smile. He’s gone back to the beginning (God Seed). His words: “I’m reading it with new perspective now.  Having gone through all the other stories.  How they connect together.  Each story is standalone and completely different but together they create this incredible feeling that there is much more to discover.  I am reading them looking for the clues. I want to know MORE!”

It’s incredibly pleasing to get this kind of feedback. Not just positive but also the buzz in somebody’s voice – words – when they get the fact that each story fits a bigger picture, and reveals more of it.

“Fans of Science Fiction will enjoy this book, as it has much to offer on many levels. The action is fast-paced and builds the highly inventive story, which is centered on a character swept up into perilous events that defy rational explanation and put his mind to the ultimate test. The author spins an engaging and unsettling tale of a dark future filled with danger and deceit—and heroism. It is very well written and kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. Recommended!”L.R.Ryan

“Rodger’s world is one of shadows and double dealing, cloak and dagger. No one is as they seem and everyone has a tainted past and secrets. The action is tight and fast paced, once you start reading you will not want to stop until the last line.”Lincoln Farish

.

David J Rodger’s first novel God Seed has since been followed up by hit after hit (Dante’s Fool; Iron Man Project, Edge, Living in Flames), including a raft of books set in the same world after Yellow Dawn has happened (Dog Eat Dog; The Black Lake; The Social Club). But it’s here, in God Seed, that the foundations for an entire universe were laid down in a book written in 1996.

Adam Kyle, acclaimed documentary film-maker, is in England, embedded within a group of corporate mercenaries. It’s to be yet another feather in his cap. But when the operation goes terribly wrong, Kyle finds himself battling for his life, his sanity, and maybe even his very soul as a new and dramatic story unfolds, dragging him across the globe…and beyond.
