Signals from Hong Kong – A Cyberpunk Style to Texting

My friend Dan B has sent me these texts after arriving in Hong Kong

I’ve known Dan B since 2005 and during these intervening years I’ve come to see him as one of life’s true Cyberpunks.  He regularly travels to international locations to teach very small specialised modules.

He sent these over a spread of a few hours:

“Into deep jet lag. Night has fallen with a thud. Hong Kong rushes around me. Opulent, vibrant and dirty.”

“Sat drinking ice-cold beer in the gathering dusk outside my favourite bar. Reading situationist design critique as airliners pass low overhead. Rumbling as they tear the clouds apart. I watch lights flicker on in people’s high-rise kitchenettes and draw plans for software art pieces…

… Situation normal.”

“The young French bankers talk soft furnishings and the price of rent in Sheung Wan and from next door comes  the rattle of octogenarians playing mah Jong.”

Dan’s the kind of chap who does whatever he puts his mind to. A few years ago he grew bored of the house where he lived, so sold it and bought an old warehouse – converted it a massive open plan living space, where he can park his VDub van next to his sofa.  Very much like the character Lex Landro in the cyberpunk novel God Seed.

God Seed

By David J Rodger

One man’s epic journey into the heart of a cosmic, alien darkness

“A palpable hit. I read this twice in quick succession, both times getting goosebumps”

“A compact grenade of sharp tech ideas, (in)human fury, revenge, ancient bloodlines and chilling supernatural horror, all set to explode in your mind as it builds to its gruesome climax.”

David J Rodger’s first novel God Seed has since been followed up by hit after hit (Dante’s Fool; Iron Man Project, Edge, Living in Flames), including a raft of books set in the same world after Yellow Dawn has happened (Dog Eat Dog; The Black Lake; The Social Club). But it’s here, in God Seed, that the foundations for an entire universe were laid down in a book written in 1996.

Adam Kyle, acclaimed documentary film-maker, is in England, embedded within a group of corporate mercenaries. It’s to be yet another feather in his cap. But when the operation goes terribly wrong, Kyle finds himself battling for his life, his sanity, and maybe even his very soul as a new and dramatic story unfolds, dragging him across the globe…and beyond.

It isn’t just his documentary that is at stake, but the fate of every living thing in the Universe.
