After the trauma of what happened at the Merkenson Estate, the characters seek to remain in Living City of Montpellier, recover and find a new direction
Yellow Dawn – The Age of Hastur, first published in 2007, is an RPG written by British Science Fiction & Dark Fantasy author David J Rodger – it blends the Cthulhu Mythos and cyberpunk genres in a post-apocalyptic setting. It also has three novels set within it: Dog Eat Dog, The Black Lake and The Social Club.
- Winter – built like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger with North American First Nation features. An expert in martial arts and wilderness survival.
- Brendan – slim, awkward in appearance, with dark hair and untrusting blue eyes; he wears black clothing and carries an air of suppressed pain around with him. Scars, like energy burns, to parts of his face hint at his meddling with metaphysical powers. A road mage.
- Bela – tall, bulky, a victim of the 1st wave that left him Changed at the molecular level. Called an ‘Orc’ by those wishing to insult.
- Aaron – 16 years old, tall, willowy, good-looking, quick-witted and intelligent, he was only 6 when Yellow Dawn happened. His survival is a bit of a mystery. Good with his hands and fixing things, his movement is limited by a gammy leg, fixed into a leg-brace.
- Jean – tall, good-looking man, early 30s with classic southern French features; lean and muscular with a long mane of dark hair and blue eyes. Wears a beaten up leather jacket and leather trousers and boots that belong on a fashion parade, not the wilderness.
- Fifi – French girl, 22 years old, dark hair that could do with a comb, teeth a little too big for her mouth and a flat, wide nose, hardly a looker, but with an incredible aura, sense of presence and razor-sharp intellect she is quite the character. Dresses down, an artist, but anyone who gets to know her quickly discovers she comes from money and power.
RESUME 1st of June YD+10 @ 9 AM
Winter, Jean, Aaron and Brendan are all about to be evicted from Samir’s flat. The landlord has made contact to come round and inspect the place. They need to be out by NOON.
Fifi has been living back at home with her mother.
Samir is in jail.
Bela remains absent. There is damage to the wall of the room he was using.
During the week of downtime:
Aaron has been gambling and boosted his net cash worth by around 12,000.
Winter has been studying Native American History, Culture and Folklore – and recovering from his strange burns.
Fifi has been home mostly, with her mother, but comes over a lot to hangout although she is less fluffy, more quiet and serious since her incident.
Brendan has been spending time browsing bookstores and discovering aspects of the Living City of Montepellier that are only visible to those with the right skills to see them…
Aaron and Winter are the only ones there to move out. There isn’t much to carry. Fifi rocks up to help and they take a cab to a less affluent part of the city; grubby with a lot of non-French, non-European survivors crowded into the limited space. They pay 3 months rent on a 3 bedroom + 1 lounge apartment on first floor of a four floor building (including ground floor); it’s 1600 credits a month – Aaron pays the full 4,800.
Aaron takes the biggest room for himself. It’s big enough for a double bed and not much else – he throws a little bit of money on basic furnishings and posters for the wall.
Winter grabs another bedroom for himself. No furniture. He can’t afford it.
That leaves one spare bedroom and a lounge for the rest of the team: Bela, Brendan, Samir and Jean are currently…out.
Fifi buys some foam furniture and recycled paper mache chairs for the lounge. It is very small, very basic and will soon feel very claustrophobic if everyone returns.
That afternoon Aaron is approached by The Blade (high-stakes gambler from Aigues-Mortes and here)
He sells Aaron a proposition. Represent him at a game tomorrow night. Not for money. Flat fee for taking part and a juicy reward if Aaron wins. There will be other young pups there, just like him, representing Patrons.
Day rolls by. That night the team get dressed-up.
Fifi makes a remarkable transformation, a red dress, make-up, she looks great! Aaron has his flawless James Bond tux but manages to make it look like a sack hanging off a bunch of coat pegs on him, plus he tries something with his hair which goes… really wrong. Winter was going to turn up wearing waterproof walking gear and a sword… everyone tells him this isn’t going to work. Aaron buys Winter a cheap second hand business suit that looks like shiny black plastic, including black plastic shoes, socks and a bad plastic tie.
Get to the event. 20th Floor penthouse apartment above a hotel, occupies whole floor space. Apartment has been modified to accommodate the event – organised by Large Cosmos Fraternity. Turns out apartment belongs to Blade.
Aaron is introduced to 6 other “kids”, who are young and edgy like him. They will be playing the game. No money on the table, just tokens. Odd.
Aaron also meets the other 6 Patrons… they come to inspect each of the other ‘kids”. One of them is Toten Reich… he seems tense and bothered that Aaron is there – on an opposing side, so to speak. None of the patrons are allowed to touch the other players… several try, Winter is there to warn them off. Interesting times.
Fifi mingles with the 60 or so guests who observe from the viewing area. Champagne and fine wine and spirits flow.
Winter spots a familiar face in the crowd, a blonde women with haunted blue eyes – but who has been done up with makeup and good clothes. He knows her but can’t recall where (failed IDEA roll) – she sees him and is bothered by his presence. She slinks away into the crowd.
RESUME 2nd of June YD+10 @ 7 PM
The game is about to begin. A tall, middle-aged man with coiffured black hair and white gloves introduces everyone and lays down some rules.
Bela, Brendan, Jean are not around.
Samir is in jail.
<> No Rank Rolls for this session (9th December)
<> All Money up to date – also, some characters have now stated how much of their money they carry round as e-Cash, how much is on online account (accessible via PA with internet connection, and so open to abuse by anybody stealing PA and getting through security — before character can cancel access). Nobody is currently carrying any gold, silver, copper or precious gems.
<> Brendan and Jean and Bela will need to state: How much of their cash is on digital accounts (type of access) and how much is carried on them in gold and gems *with a % for any given time*
<> Winter lost all his gear at the Merkenson estate.
<> Baron Toten Reich has talked to Bela about his “progress” after seeing him coming in (flying) recent night. There was also a small gift.
<> Brendan has the gore-smeared cerebral codexes for Tengo Gin and Magnus Hardstrom in his pocket.
<> In Celeste: Bela has some raw components and specialised components he scavenged on the way to Prudence.
<> Bela has a special ops gel suit, although armour is wrecked over heart and right thigh.
<> Brendan has an assault rife with 24 rounds remaining.
<> Winter and Samir have acquired a large number of firearms and ammunition, plus heavy weaponry, from Mohammed’s camp and the gasses mercs at Bino Bit compound (these are written on DJR paper notes).

Want to know more about Dead Zones and Dead Cities?
If you want to read more about Dead Zones and the Infection, I would strongly suggest you read Dog Eat Dog. Alternatively, if you’re interested in the cosmic horror that has followed the event known as Yellow Dawn, read The Black Lake – which the Guardian called “Atmospheric & Creepy”. Or, if you like the idea of the claustrophobia of living inside of a post-apocalyptic version of London surrounded by Infection, then read The Social Club.
