Yellow Dawn Session Notes 25th November: The Terrified Boy – The Long Sting After the Bite

After high drama and looking death in the face… the end is strange and littered with Myth

Yellow Dawn – The Age of Hastur, first published in 2007, is an RPG written by British Science Fiction & Dark Fantasy author David J Rodger – it blends the Cthulhu Mythos and cyberpunk genres in a post-apocalyptic setting. It also has three novels set within it: Dog Eat Dog, The Black Lake and The Social Club.

.

THE CHARACTERS:

  • Winter – built like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger with North American First Nation features. An expert in martial arts and wilderness survival.
  • Brendan – slim, awkward in appearance, with dark hair and untrusting blue eyes; he wears black clothing and carries an air of suppressed pain around with him. Scars, like energy burns, to parts of his face hint at his meddling with metaphysical powers. A road mage.
  • Bela – tall, bulky, a victim of the 1st wave that left him Changed at the molecular level. Called an ‘Orc’ by those wishing to insult.
  • Aaron – 16 years old, tall, willowy, good-looking, quick-witted and intelligent, he was only 6 when Yellow Dawn happened. His survival is a bit of a mystery. Good with his hands and fixing things, his movement is limited by a gammy leg, fixed into a leg-brace.
  • Jean – tall, good-looking man, early 30s with classic southern French features; lean and muscular with a long mane of dark hair and blue eyes. Wears a beaten up leather jacket and leather trousers and boots that belong on a fashion parade, not the wilderness.
  • Fifi – French girl, 22 years old, dark hair that could do with a comb, teeth a little too big for her mouth and a flat, wide nose, hardly a looker, but with an incredible aura, sense of presence and razor-sharp intellect she is quite the character. Dresses down, an artist, but anyone who gets to know her quickly discovers she comes from money and power.

RESUME 25th May YD+10 @ 8 AM

Winter is missing: buried up to his neck in the middle-of-nowhere

Fifi is missing: in a ceremonial chamber

Jean has found somewhere to hide outside in the sticks.

Aaron is at Samir’s place… come 8 A.M he is on the phone to Reno.  He learns that Fifi’s mother has called ex-cop Reno Brigadano to put together a task force of trusted men and women – a task force. He learns from Reno that she went straight to Thomas Merkenson’s hotel with several offices and woke him up. The plan was to bring him into custody, quickly, quietly. But instead, after a brief conversation with Merkenson, she orders the men to leave. Right now, Lilith, the private secretary of Thomas Merkenson has flown in by aerodyne, landed at the hotel, and both her and the Chief of Police (Fifi’s mum) have departed by aerodyne together.  Meanwhile, Thomas Merkenson has just checked out.. and was overhead by staff talking to lawyers, saying that the situation can be wrapped up between them and Lilith and that he needs to get back to the dig – the project is at a critical stage.

Samir in jail

Brendan is waking up beneath the bartop of where he collapsed drunk the night before; he has been handcuffed to the footrail; his head feels like a goat took a shit inside his mouth.

Bela is missing… nobody knows where. He “should” have been at Samir’s apartment. There are strange gashes and markings on the wall of the room he was using. The window is open…

It was a tense situation. Almost every member of the team was somewhere other than where they wanted to be.

Jean – in the light of a new day he snuck away from the horror of the estate, followed glimpses of the tell-tale red mud on the highway and even found a spot where a vehicle had left the road to go cross-country. He continue to follow the signs and then, when the trail ran cold, he shouted Winter’s name.

Winter shouted back, faint but audible – “Over here!”

Winter was up to his chest, upright where he had been buried…. but had carefully managed to work one arm loose without the guarding snake becoming aware of what he was doing. At the last moment, the snake saw it and went to wrap around his neck, but Winter, fast and strong, grabbed it by the head and crushed the life out of it.

Jean dug him out and together they ran the 20 miles along the interlink to the edge of Montpellier’s dead zone.

Meanwhile, prior to this, Fifi has seem what monstrous horror came slithering down the curving ramp into the enclosed chamber… a giant snake thing, half man, half serpent, a god in physical form… it grabbed her as its mouth opened impossibly wide, jaw disconnecting, and then consumed her whole.

In Montepellier, Aaron and Brendan are both picked up by police in uniform.

Outside Montpellier Jean and Winter are having a tough time, but eventually they walk through the Dead Zone to reach the Living City. They get through the IFZ but are taken in by a policeman waiting outside Samir’s apartment.

The team find themselves brought together in a conference room within the Montepellier police HQ.

In walks Josephine (Chief of police and Fifi’s mother) and…. Fifi herself. Everyone is stunned. Nobody knows what happened to her down in the horrible tunnels below the estate. And neither does Fifi. She can’t remember.

The Chief of Police tells them that Thomas Merkenson is not going to press charges for them trespassing. He also states that they must have consumed wine, used by some of his staff, with hallucinogenic substances (not illegal). This explains what everyone thinks they experienced. The Chief of Police gives them a mild but stern telling off and says one more mistake here in Montpellier and they are out.

Afterwards, the team head to a bar, late afternoon, to discuss what the hell just happened and what to do next. Winter talks to Rhonda at the School to say that they found nothing to indicate Willian is at risk. Winter believes this… but the rest of the team do not! Brendan thinks that Lilith could actually be an incarnation of Medusa from myth and legend!

Rhonda pays them for the work they have done. Job over.

Jean cannot contend with allowing Willian to be sent back to these monsters. He conscience, and his sanity will not allow it.

The team agree to remain at Samir’s apartment until his lease ends (end of month) to heal and recover. They plan to stay in Montpellier and see what happens short term, with a mid-term plan to head out to the dig site that Thomas Merkenson is working at…

Jean is left wondering, is the woman that seduced him days earlier the character from myth and legend? Was it, could it really be Medusa?

Want to know more about Dead Zones and Dead Cities?

If you want to read more about Dead Zones and the Infection, I would strongly suggest you read Dog Eat Dog. Alternatively, if you’re interested in the cosmic horror that has followed the event known as Yellow Dawn, read The Black Lake – which the Guardian called “Atmospheric & Creepy”. Or, if you like the idea of the claustrophobia of living inside of a post-apocalyptic version of London surrounded by Infection, then read The Social Club.
