Yellow Dawn Session Notes 19th August ¦ Aftermath of Murder at Aigues-Mortes

It’s the immediate aftermath of the gas escape. The characters suspect they’ll be held accountable for numerous deaths and remain wary about the consequences of murdering such a powerful member of the corporate alliance – UTOC and MOCID may take an interest

Yellow Dawn – The Age of Hastur, first published in 2007, is an RPG written by British Science Fiction & Dark Fantasy author David J Rodger – it blends the Cthulhu Mythos and cyberpunk genres in a post-apocalyptic setting. It also has three novels set within it: Dog Eat Dog, The Black Lake and The Social Club.

  • Winter – built like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger with North American First Nation features. An expert in martial arts and wilderness survival.
  • Brendan – slim, awkward in appearance, with dark hair and untrusting blue eyes; he wears black clothing and carries an air of suppressed pain around with him. Scars, like energy burns, to parts of his face hint at his meddling with metaphysical powers. A road mage.
  • Bela – tall, bulky, a victim of the 1st wave that left him Changed at the molecular level. Called an ‘Orc’ by those wishing to insult.
  • Aaron – 16 years old, tall, willowy, good looking, quick witted and intelligent, he was only 6 when Yellow Dawn happened. His survival is a bit of a mystery. Good with his hands and fixing things, his movement is limited by a gammy leg, fixed into a leg-brace.

RESUME 12th May YD+10 @ 5 A.M.
Brendan and Winter outside the walls of Aigues-Mortes; the yacht, with surviving mercs aboard is about to set off. Aaron and Bela are in the rib, almost a mile up the canal… reeling in shock and horror at the cloud of deadly gas engulfing the settlement.

5 A.M. Bela and Aaron are idling in the rib, at the edge of the canal, looking back in horror at the immense cloud of poisonous gas enveloping the walls of Aigues-Mortes. They are unaware of the three degenerates who stalk up through the predawn darkness, armed with metal bars – and one with an axe… until the three of them are leaping on board and slashing and swiping with desperate fury.

Aaron smartly guns the engine, throwing two of the assailants to the floor of the boat (one is knocked out). Aaron gets a small cut to his leg from the axe (-2 hp) he lunges up  to grab the axe arm but is himself thrown from the boat into the water when he loses his balance.

Bela gets up to help but also loses his balance and tumbles onto the floor, with the risk of getting tangled into a grapple with one of the attackers he lunges to his feet and dives overboard, then swims over to help Aaron who is struggling to swim. The bandits whoop and holler and parade around the edge of the boat, mocking the two figures in the water, then speed off.

Bela and Aaron walk back to Aigues-Mortes as the cloud of gas dissipates and the dawn brings golden sunlight from the sky. Reaching Aigues-Mortes they find everyone who lives outside the fortified settlement is awake due to the noise of screaming and shouting that erupted after the gas cloud.  Bela is making his way through this crowd when he is roughly shoved back. Abu, the mean-faced Somali thug is in his way – “I thought we had gotten rid of you”. A fight breaks out.  Bela is overwhelmed by Abu and his thugs… but Bela spits into Abu’s face and rants about how Abu has no idea where he has been and what he has picked up – “I am Infected you fucker and now you are too.”

Abu hates The Changed, and loses his COOL. Freaking out he backs away, rubbing at his eyes. His associate shouts INFECTED. The crowd outside Aigues-Mortes, already strung out by the gas attack and evidence that people are dying INSIDE Aigues-Mortes, react badly to this alarm…. Abu is cut down by men and women armed with swords, axes and machetes – possible CRC team.  Nobody reacts to Bela. He is lucky.

By 6 A.M. Brendan and Winter and Bela and Aaron, are all together with Deraloux in his small office in the militia building by the main gate. Baron Toten Reich is there too.  Yes, people died, but they tell the characters not to feel responsible. It was a small bad for a much Greater Good. And besides, Hardstrom is taking the blame.

Winter tells Deraloux and Toten Reich that they have Hardstrom’s codex. Asks if maybe it should be destroyed now.  Deraloux looks at Brendan and the way the Road Mage is holding onto his grisly prize… and cautiously suggests that the ultimate fate of Hardstrom rests with the people (or person) he hurt the most.

Toten Reich and Deraloux cannot publicly thank the characters but privately they do. And hand over 5,000 in gems. Their own money.  Deraloux says that the characters are welcome to take anything they need from the militia armoury.

Bela goes into a small ante-room with BaronToten Reich and when he comes out again he seems different.

Team go to North East corner to help with triage and attending to dead and injured (respiratory issues from gas).

Armstrong comes to find Aaron and says, “Rumour is you’re leaving Aigues-Mortes. There is a game on tonight. High stakes. Some crazy freinds of mine have heard about your flare. They want to play against you. Some other friends want to help bankroll you – for a big cut of course but there is no risk of you owing them money.

Aaron agrees. He is due to play 8pm tonight.

Then they go to their flat and sleep.  Bela sleeps very deeply. Profound dreams. When he is woken by Aaron, his first instinct is to clutch at his chest.

Whilst  Aaron is out buying smart clothing for the game tonight; Winter goes downstairs to their faithful bakery and buys in food. When he returns he finds a handwritten note placed on the step to  the property. Scrawled ramblings of Professor D, he now states he has made a mistake in considering the characters allies – he now sees them as foes… they must not attempt to stop him, they must not cross him or he will destroy them.

It is obvious he has gone quite mad.

Winter, Bela and Aaron review the notebooks and journal and map they found in Professor D’s place in Montpelier. Soubere is the place mentioned as being near the “source” of the powder.  That is 20 miles to the north west, deep into a landscape that has always been heavily rural.
