Resume 10th May YD+10 @ 11pm
Langford and Winter are roasting fresh rabbit over a fire, camping half a mile from the interlink just outside the Living City of Montpellier (beyond the Dead Zone). Aaron and Brendan are injured, standing with Deraloux (captain of the watch) coping with the unfolding horror on Noyer Street.
The characters are still operating as two separate teams.
In Aigues Mortes:
Brendan and Aaron discover the details of the true horror that took place on Noyer Street in the moments before Deraloux shot out the last of the strange lights. Wealthy woman, daughter of a merchant family from the Living City of Montpellier who had been slumming it in this part of Aigues-Mortes with a writer, claimed a shadow the size of a house came out of nowhere and swallowed the writer whole. It is a fact that he has vanished. And a little further along the street, the elderly brothers: one of whom is a cripple – and was blind but can now see, in some weird extra sensory way, is now sedated to be transferred to a sanitorium… because his brother was literally torn apart inside their house in a room with windows overlooked by the strange lights.
After more militia arrive and contain the scene, Brendan and Aaron go back to their simple living space and drink with Deraloux – Brendan cracking open his bottle of “something special” whiskey.
Deraloux wants to know what Brendan thinks caused this. Brendan doesn’t hold back and can see that Deraloux believes him. Deraloux leaves and says, “You two said you were leaving…?” he lets the query hang in the air like a suggestion. Brendan nods. Nothing more is said.
Outside the Living City of Montpellier:
Winter and Langford are camping a small distance from the Interlink having spent the day getting through the Dead Zone. They’re roasting fresh rabbit when they are assailed by two bandits – a bad decision by the bandits. Whilst Winter has one of them held in a painful grip, Langford charges with a spear and runs the poor wretch through killing him instantly and nearly skewering Winter too. It seems that Langford’s character has changed dramatically since shrugging free of the constraints of university life… almost as if somebody different was running him.
They relocate camp and leave the dead man for the sunrise.
Winter and Langford walk the Interlink back to Aigues-Mortes. The route is busy, the day is extremely hot (unusually so, nearly 45c !!!), but they have water and are not in a rush. They reach the arranged rendezvous point many hours later than planned – outside the settlement, but no sign that Brendan or others have been there. As Winter sets up camp they are joined by 3 men and a merchant wagon (carrying meats and spirits for Aigues-Mortes) who want to share camping / safety in numbers. Winter is wary but accepts.
Brendan and Aaron spend day recovering from yesterday, they both sustained numerous injuries (blunt force trauma and deep connective tissue bruising), they are ambulatory but in a lot of pain. Repair Aaron’s mangled leg brace. Then covertly receive a note asking them to meet at ruins of old mansion 1 mile outside of the walls, 9pm tonight – come alone, come unarmed – a mutual friend. Brendan assumes this is Professor Ducane but when they get there, where a trail of candles lead down into vaulted basement below ruins, they discover it is Deraloux. The captain of the watch is smoking a cigar, with a bottle of whisky and three glasses. He doesn’t speak. Instead he walks over, closes the heavy wooden door they came through and locks it. Then opens another door and Baron Toten Reich steps through, wrapped in a black cloak, black gloves and wearing the same featureless black mask. The Baron doesn’t say anything but pulls out a handful of something that looks like sparkling blue electricity and smoke, quickly throws it where it darts around the chamber and impacts on something invisible… rapidly visible… a man wearing a predator concealment shroud, a merc! Carrying a gun and bristling with technology… the electrical device zaps him and drops him to the floor. Then the device whizzes over to Brendan, exposes a small spider drone clinging to his shoulder… as it is exposes it flashes red and starts to beep, Brendan tries to brush it off but it clings to him painfully. The Baron leaps over, grabs it and hurls it away just a moment before it explodes. It would have done fatal damage to Brendan. The device whirls over to Aaron and does the same again, but this time the spider drone is zapped before it can trigger an explode-now response. The Baron goes over to the fallen merc and smashes his skull off the wall with a force that shatters the back of the man’s head, killing him.
They all move to a safer location. Brendan grabs the bottle of whisky. They talk.
Magnus Hardstrom is on his boat, moored in canal outside Aigues-Mortes. Samir has been working for the Baron and Deraloux, trying to convince high-ranking members of UDP and MOCID that Hardstrom is harbouring an Infected on his yacht, breaching every kind of law and protocol set down about these things – but no buy, nobody wants to move against Hardstrom without evidence.
The Baron and Deraloux cannot afford to be seen taking action against him.
So it comes down to this.
Deraloux has identified the location of the control panel on Hardstroms yacht that is used to fire the cannisters of lethal compound into water – the compound that creates the sickly white gas that has killed so many already. Instead of firing the canisters like a projectile, drop them into canal next to the boat and led Hardstrom suffer an appropriate fate.
Also note that there is, or was, a young girl locked up in Hardstrom’s lab module… and potentially something else there too.
Brendan and Aaron have to act tonight – once Hardstrom / Tengo Gin realise they have lost contact with their merc, it is likely that they will REACT or DEPART.
Deraloux and the Baron will give them anything they need but cannot be seen.
