The team continue to investigate the brutal self-mutilation on Noyer street – and their attentions come to focus on experimental street lighting put there some months ago.
Yellow Dawn – The Age of Hastur, first published in 2007, is an RPG written by British Science Fiction & Dark Fantasy author David J Rodger – it blends the Cthulhu Mythos and cyberpunk genres in a post-apocalyptic setting. It also has three novels set within it: Dog Eat Dog, The Black Lake and The Social Club.
Resume 6th May YD+10.
In apartment. Awake. Everyone has had enough sleep. They are talking about hallucinations, drugging, gas. They know the milkman was effected but he hasnt gouged his eyes out, right?
Team grab coffee and fresh pastries from Bertrands place downstairs as dawn light spills over the high medieval walls. A blue sky above. Summer warmth and lovely, despite the horror of last night.
<> Aaron tries to tell landlady there is something wrong with lights. She laughs it off.
<> Team visit council building and get access to minutes of meeting where new lighting agreed; discover three options were presented, chief engineer for Aigues-Mortes fought to have a new experimental type of lighting used… half the energy costs, really unique and revolutionary, could be resold across the globe with Aigues-Mortes reaping vast rewards.
<> Team go to visit AG University and manage a chance encounter with Chief Engineer (he is very busy). Team explain there may be unforeseen risks with the lighting. The engineer is genuinely concerned about this and wants to know more – however he has to attend other meetings; team arrange to meet him 6pm on 8th May to explain the risks the lights bring. The team learn that the lights were developed by a professor GD in Montpelier. They acquire a letter of introduction.
<> Team visit the milk delivery man who had been frightened days earlier (according to locals). He is low intelligence but good hearted – keen to show off his fridge! Team learn nothing useful.
<> Team go to Olive Tree Cafe opposite AG University. Dripping with money from over-privileged kids in their late teens and twenties who are from wealthy families in Aigues-Mortes or surrounding area. The decor is fake survivor settlement, and really puts Winter’s nose out of joint – he causes a bit of a scene about this. The owner, a young man full of vitality and arrogant confidence smacks him down with words. Brendan orders an expensive coffee and sits down. Aaron tries to get in on some gambling action with students but is ignored – looks scruffy in his combats and creaking leg brace. Winter and Aaron leave. Brendan stays long enough to cast FRIGHT on the owner and shake him so much the man looses Anxiety points. Brendan leaves with a cruel and smug smile on his lips.
<> Aaron convinces others that he can make money with his gambling talent. They approached Monduroy. Fat and sweating, the deputy chief of militia cuts a deal, he will bankroll Aaron 10,000 credits in return for 13,000 plus 30% of any winnings beyond this. It is shady business but Aaron is confident.
<> Later, characters realise that Monduroy is in a win win situation. Even if Aaron loses and owes him BIG money, Monduroy can use the debt as leverage against the team to facilitate what he wants with Magnus Hardstrom.
<> Monduroy gives Aaron clothes from some wealthy young people he has jailed and beaten up.
<> Monduroy gives Aaron a pouch with diamonds and small platinum ingots: 10,000 credits as agreed.
<> At the game, the team encounter Pepi, a bald, turkey nosed French Arab with a nice suit and lots of hookers. Pepi takes them into the courtyard of lavish building… more hookers and a small army of hired muscle. There they meet Mr Armstrong. Late 40s, American with an ex-wrestler build… short brown hair going grey on the sides and a total no nonsense attitude. He tells Winter to drop the weapons; tells Brendan that he has a “talent” right? Brendan says no, Mr Armstrong says don’t bullshit me, you have a “talent” and Brendan realises that his Road Mage identity has been noted. Armstrong suggests that Brendan uses the services of the courtyard, on the house, looking at Monduroy – who reluctantly agrees. Winter and Aaron follow Armstrong into the gaming room that could be a high stakes gambling den anywhere in the pre-Yellow Dawn world. Brendan is greeted by a charming young lady wearing not a lot who grabs a bottle of chilled champagne from an ice-bucket and leads him to a room so he can “show her his special talent”.
<> Aaron changes his money into chips and learns that Monduroy only gave him 9,000.
<> Aaron gets into a game two other players, later joined by a third. By 11 pm he has 20,000 credits in his stack. At this point two players depart, leaving Aaron with the pro. The pro wants to play for 10,000 stakes. Aaron declines. The pro tries to intimidate. Winter begins to intervene but Mr Armstrong arrives to close it down – escorting away the pro.
<> Mr Armstrong has arranged to handle Monduroy’s share – however, there is a problem: Brendan has used rather more of the house services than expected. Champagne and girls. After deducting what he has used, the team are left with 3,000 credits. Winter and Aaron split this, leaving out Brendan…. who they have to walk home whilst he sings at the top of his voice.
RESUME 1 a.m. 7th May YD+10, Winter and Aaron have just put Brendan to bed – he is going to be in pain tomorrow. They are at their apartment above the bakery on South Gate. Next steps are…. Montpelier?
