Letters: Boston Cop Goes Back to Pick Through Body of my Work

Letters

Nice email thread between myself and a chap who is Lieutenant in PD of suburban Boston area.  Rewarding to see folks re-reading my work and picking up the interconnections between some of the books.

I’ve edited out SPOILERS.

A complete aside…I know you jump around chronologically in your books, but am I right that Social Club happened before Dog Eat Dog? based on the fact that _____ died at the end of D-E-D?

Yes, totally correct!   :o)

If you’ve read God Seed, you might be interested to know that _____ is due to “return” to Earthly reality via the body (alive but without a mind) you’ll have read about in Dog Eat Dog.

Also, in God Seed, in Cairo, there’s a scene where Kyle is with Kurt Hansen – and Hansen is staring at some black dude giving him the eyeball in Cafe of Mirrors. A throwaway moment, except that black dude is _______ in the follow-up novel to DANTE’s FOOL (working title Host System Down).

How’s life over there? Bloody cold at the moment?!

Yes, I’ve read them all, but have actually gone back to start at the beginning all over again with God Seed. Just to try and get the continuity straight in my mind.
I originally read them over a number of months, so I started hunting and pecking away trying to find links between the stories (like Vincent Brent’s link to Dex from Living In Flames). Figured it would be easier to remember if I just blasted thru them all again.

I’ll keep an eye out for the “black guy” in Cairo.

And I’m psyched to know ____will be reappearing. I was left wondering if the (apparent) AI that ____ and the chick aerodyne pilot ended up _____ in Dante’s Fool was specifically building a _____ Big Bads….

It HAS been “bloody cold” lately (single digits, with below zero wind chills…brutal…the oft-cited “Polar Vortex” at work). But, that has moderated hugely the last few days. It’s a balmy 48 degrees right now and raining. The substantial snowfall we’ve already had is gone—that’s not a bad thing.

Life is best when there’s a steady supply of good writing to read (hint-hint) and some good bourbon on hand.

Cheers.

Nice email exchange fella, super pleased to know you’re re-reading those books.  I miss those characters. You spend so many months, sometimes years, building them up and living with them inside your head and then one day you finish the book and that’s it. Done. You don’t get to see them again. Maybe I should start writing serial novels that focus on one character throughout? *rubs chin*

Although the proposed Shadows of the Quantinex novel, based on the RPG Campaign Book that explains what caused Yellow Dawn to happen – could be a platform to bring a lot of these folks together in one creative space.

As for Dante’s Fool and the (apparent) AI. Yup. You’re spot on with your supposition about what it was trying to achieve. However the follow up book’s title should give you a clue as to the fate of it – and the characters left working for it: Host System Down.

And of course, ____ has to resolve the way he tricked ____…  3rd novel already mapped out called DEMONA, which is the name of the daughter of _____, but also refers to Demon A.  It’s the final call for ____. His chance to save his soul or pay for what he’s done.

Fek knows when I’m going to write these. So many books ready to go!

Talk soon.

Same here. David. It isn’t often that a member of the reading public can get feedback from a favorite author.

Charles Stross, a Scot who heavily mines the Mythos with his excellent Laundry series has kept it very fresh over four novels and a few short stories by actually having his characters change & grow (not always for the better) as they live thru the various plot machinations. He also started out in the first four novels consciously writing them in the style of old Brit espionage authors (Deighton, Fleming, Sterling (?), and whoever wrote/created Modesty Blaze). Excellent stuff, especially for Lovecraft fans. I think I first heard of you in the comments section of Stross’ blog.

As for your work, even though you promote them as stand-alone stories, they are made richer by being placed in the wider context of all of the books taken as a whole. I would argue it IS a serial, just without the over-riding main character/hero to explicitly tie them together. It seems as though your pre-YD novels are moving forward in time. closer to the actual event. I downloaded a free sample of the Quantinex RPG guide and there’s definitely plenty there for a book (or two) about the actual event.
