“…an explosive narrative with brilliant cliffhangers” – The Guardian on Ack-Ack Macaque

I had the pleasure of enjoying a pint with Gareth L Powell last night, a British Science Fiction Steampunk author who is launching Hive Monkey, his much-anticipated sequel to Ack-Ack Macaque. Published by Solaris it’s yet another example of the powerhouse of creative talent that the city of Bristol clasps within its verdant hills and eclectic fusion of architectural styles (medieval to 20th century brutalism and beyond).

Helga Pearson (Geek of Solitude) has delivered a high-quality review of Hive Monkey that provides a wonderfully positive insight into the fun, wit and grit style of Powell’s writing – and the main character  in this emerging series of books.

Ack-Ack Macaque sports the cigar-biting humour and kick-ass attitude of Clint Eastwood and Hellboy combined. He says things like,“If life gives you lemons, pull a gun on it and say, “F#*k you lemons, where are the goddamn bananas?”

The launch is taking place at Forbidden Planet Bristol Megastore on Saturday 14th December from 1:00pm – 2:00pm. Powell is planning to do a reading from Hive Monkey followed by a short Q+A, sign some books, and then move next door for some drinks at the Brass Pig. All are welcome. You don’t need tickets. Click here for directions. If you’d like to join the event on Facebook, you can find it here.

Gareth L. Powell is the author of Silversands and The Recollection, as well as the critically acclaimed short story collection, The Last Reef. His work has been published all over the world and featured in a number of recent anthologies. Hive Monkey is his second Ack-Ack Macaque novel for Solaris. A regular contributor to anthologies and magazines, Gareth penned a strip for Britain’s long-running sci-fi and fantasy comic, 2000AD, and has written articles for The Irish Times, SFX, Focus, and Futurismic.
