Fantastic new story telling open mic night ignites the voices of Bristol – Review for 9th October

Let Me Tell You A Story, Jack

Will Harding MC for Let Me Tell You A Story Jack

I went to this last night. First of a new story telling open mic night at the Crofter’s Rights, in Bristol England. For an inaugural event it was jam packed from the moment the doors opened at 7.30 pm. Rows of chairs and stools arranged in a semi-circle around the main stage. Moody lighting. A microphone held in place with blue-tac. And the energetic and wonderfully amusing antics of the MC Will Harding there to introduce and relax you. The crowd was great. Patient and appreciative of the diverse range of folks stepping up to grab the mic.

My favourites were Sven (from Belgium) who came to Bristol two days ago via hitchhiking across Europe and through the Middle-East to Australia (and an Iranian jail cell) and merely stood up to say how and why he was there. And Martyn Kelly, slightly bitter, somewhat sardonic, who wrote a Letter From a Parallel Universe: a love letter with multiple possibilities folded up between the sheets of paper. Really good stuff. Zaniah – who told a story about a girl trying to return a dead dog to its owner in a suitcase – only to have it stolen at a London tube station. And a girl whose name I fail to recall (sorry!) who strummed and finger-plucked a guitar and sang a ditty much like Van Morrison.  I stood up and took a turn. Read a very short, short-story  500 words – called HIAB-X. Or Head In A Box. VIDEO:

Video of some fragments stitched together here.  The acoustics were much better at the venue than how they sound on the video: bit of a shame.  Come along to the next one and see for yourself (November 6th).

Massive thanks to Shonette Laffy for organising.

    • Gutted I missed it. Has been in my diary since early December but was hit by man flu. Yeah I love the random energy of the night, suits the venue and always works. Thanks for stopping by and leaving words. Djr
