From comic book illustration to tattoo design with a blast of steampunk inspiration
I discovered Jennie Gyllblad’s work whilst sitting in my favourite haunt The Boston Tea Party cafe, here in the ancient Roman spa town of Bath (England). There it was hanging on the walls in the space dedicated to local artists. Swirls of colour and the immediate presence of talent staring back out at me from behind the framed glass. So I got in touch with Jennie and was delighted to be given an opportunity to showcase some of her latest work. Alongside a couple of the images that really grabbed my attention in the cafe.
The Royal – A Steampunk Portrait
I would love to have something like this – of myself, of course (ahem) – hanging proudly from the wall of my Sky Bunker.
This is the image that I really fell in love with.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jennie Gyllblad is a Swedish-born artist and designer based in Bath, who loves working with traditional media such as watercolour, gouache, ink and pencil.
Although she’ll paint anything from portraits to tattoo designs, her main line of work is in the comic book industry as an illustrator. Her current projects include full-length graphic novels Clockwork Watch (a Steampunk trilogy), Elysia (an epic coming-of-age story), and her own fantasy story entitled Skal. She has also illustrated short stories for a couple of anthologies (Bayou Arcana: Irons in the Fire, The Professor Elemental Comic: Issue 2) and stand-alone comics (Tick Tock IPA).
Aside from her graphic novel work, Jen can also be found dabbling in costume, character and environmental design, as well as working as an occasional book cover artist.
