Elena Kalis is a Russian born photographer now working off the coast of Florida. Controlling the lighting and capturing skin tone and expressions that are void of air bubbles and bloated faces, or genuinely ethereal and interesting – rather than looking like somebody plonked into a diving pool – seems to be a great skill of Kalis.
Here’s a sample of her work.
Alice in Wonderland
Kalis calls this collection of images Alice in Waterland. There’s a large set of them available to view on her website. Not all of them work but those that do are visually stunning.
This takes the normally light and airy perception of a young ballerina and plunges it into the cold depths of despair…the image captures the final, horrifying claustrophobia of death from drowning, when with lungs bursting, muscles burning, the limbs abruptly turn to lead and tumble uselessly, the body ejects the final bubbles of worthless and now poisonous air. There is light above. Salvation was close but just beyond reach for this soul.
Nyx gazing into the star womb of creation
The Greek Goddess Mother of the personified gods of sleep and death. Mysterious, beautiful and powerful, a figure rarely perceived but often found lurking in the background of many cults.
