How to build a Dalek

This is Chad…

He’s a Dalek, and apart from being one of an extraterrestrial mutant race from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who – he’s been hand crafted by a human: Major Sebastian Perry, aka Time Gypsy

This is a showcase of the work he went through in creating his ramp-loving and stair-challenged friend.

Even monstrous aliens have humble beginings.

Started the basic construction on the fender, which is about 3/4 finished. Cut out and put together the shoulder internal frame and the neck bin (primed black). Everything is coming together and if I can make a decent dome.

Well, I am surprised that the neck rings came out as well as they did, seeing how they were hand cut using nothing but a straight ruler, a pencil and a jigsaw! :-)

Note to self…A jigsaw blade that’s been used for 3 straight hours gets really bloody hot!

Neck rings fixed (I managed to break one when I realized they were spaced wrong and I tried to fix the problem O_o), painted and fitted to the inner mesh sub-section (complete)…First of the hemis painted and fitted…Gun construction started and test fitted.

The end result for a lot of effort is an excellent hand crafted piece of science fiction.  I admire people who can turn a passion for an idea into tangible reality.  Well done that (mad) Man.

Major Perry, also known for his steampunk creations under the name of Sebastian’s Rift Shoppe is a veritable engine of creativity.  Check out some of his other creations:

Oh, and here’s John Barrowman aka Captain Jack Harkness (Doctor Who and Torchwood) having a ride around inside of this thing at Fandomfest 2013.

  1. I just finished my wine cellar and my first science fiction novel, but you definitely win in the DIY category. If you ever decide to automate Chad, consider an Arduino. I have just begun experimenting with them, but it should not be too difficult.
