Part of a series of images from the shadowy fringes of the Internet.  Visuals that stir my sense for the eerie and macabre.

This is a great conceptual image of the Great Old One, Cthulhu, one of the few earth-bound (trans-dimensional) entities from within H.P.Lovecraft’s pantheon of cosmic terrors. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security that this is some flabby beast you can dispel with a couple megatons of atomic weaponry. Cthulhu’s greatest threat to mankind is currently now, whilst the thing lies dreaming somewhere at the bottom of the South Pacific, in a temple within the sunken city of R’lyeh.  I like the image because it hasn’t tried to create some surrealistic, gore-splattered rendition of a thing that is actually only part physical… rather this image could be something an investigator might find in the pages of some forbidden tome of elder lore; or a hand-inked illustration in the pages of a lost mariner’s journal, somebody who is now babbling and mad from what he’s seen whilst adrift and alone in the wild southern ocean.

The nightmare corpse-city of R’lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.

— H. P. Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu (1928)
