MASTERS OF CHAOS

A Short Slab of Speculative Fiction written by British Sci-Fi Dark Fantasy Author David J Rodger
Audio Book narration by American Voice Talent Cody J Johnson

.

-BLURB-
MASTERS OF CHAOS: {Speculative fiction} A man contemplates the world around him, taking seemingly meticulous notes of certain random but repeating events. Can he influence the world through such observations? And to what end? When unseen things are scratching at the doors of perception.

- BACKGROUND -
It’s 3,800 words, fairly meaty for a short story and uses an unusual style that, in my head at least, is based on the awesome narrative monologue method used in the film Pi by Darren Aronofsky. It charts the terrible fate hanging over the Earth during the esoteric experimentation by somebody who has stumbled onto (or been led into) the loathsome, diabolical and reality shattering concepts practiced by adepts of the Cthulhu Mythos (H.P.Lovecraft).

-COPY-
I’m in my apartment. It’s morning. I’m standing by the window looking down; dressed in a crumpled shirt, tie and suit trousers. In one hand is a bottle of expensive mineral water. In the other hand is an old-fashioned Dictaphone with a cable running up to an ear-piece and throat microphone.
My point of view: I’m looking out of the window down on a busy city street.
Picture it, a montage of ordinary people on their way to work.
Some years ago, in Argentina, an old woman decided to withdraw a little more money from her bank than usual. There was a small delay as she got her pesos. A minor cash flow problem for the bank. No harm done. Except, word of this problem got around, it echoed, and caused a run on the banks that led to the economic collapse of an entire country.
One little old lady.
One grain of sand bringing down a mountain.
It was the day I discovered I had a talent. But as with all of nature’s gifts there is need for a mentor, to nurture and guide.
I lift the Dictaphone a little even though there is no need:
8.10 – Look out apartment window.
I see a smartly dressed business woman stopping to cross a busy intersection. Her face shows she is a burns victim. She’s wearing red gloves and is holding a Starbucks.
I lick my lips and thumb record again:
8.12 – Girl A arrives on street corner, gloves, Starbucks coffee in her hand. She waits 43 seconds to cross road.
A few moments elapse and then I focus on a male student in a scuffed leather jacket, carrying a paperback novel.
8.13 – Man B appears on street corner. He is carrying a book in his hand.
I turn from the window, pull on a jacket, pocket the Dictaphone, and head outside.
Picture it. My journey to work. A sequence of images: waiting at bus stop, sitting on bus, walking through downtown city streets, walking into modern office building. A finance company.
Through all of this I appear detached and deep in thought.
8.15 – Left for work. It takes 45 minutes to get to there.

June 2012 – Bestseller

Dog Eat Dog a post-apocalyptic crime thriller with Cthulhu Mythos horror by British Sci-Fi Dark Fantasy author David J Rodger

Available in paperback or Kindle

June saw a battle for top spot between my hand-picked collection of short stories – Songs of Spheres, and the post-apocalyptic crime thriller, Dog Eat Dog, which is the first novel to be set within the world of Yellow Dawn (Mad Max meets Blade Runner; Earth ravaged by the Cthulhu Mythos).

Dog Eat Dog won out in the end with a combination of paperback sales through LULU and Kindle versions through Amazon.

Other News

I finished a new novel earlier this week. The Black Lake.  Now going through proofing and review.  So far, great feedback… it’s a fast read with the tension building up nicely.  I’m aiming to release it before September 2012.

I’m now working on the next novel.  Rise of the Iconoclast.  Another one to be set in the world of Yellow Dawn.  A rip-roaring romp of post-apocalyptic cyborgs, holding together as a bandit crew and heroes for hire. Very different to what I normally write. But I like the challenge.  I’ve got my crew defined and relevant bits fleshed out – so watch this space for updates as the story evolves.

CREW OF THE GINNY – aka Genie

  • Hariwald Hlavač
  • Tristão Steinsson
  • Malthe Herriot

.

Dog Eat Dog takes place in the near future, after the Earth has been devastated by a viral pathogen unleashed when a corporate cargo hauler crashed into the atmosphere; breaking up as a fireball across the sky, it showered Southern Europe and North Africa with a deadly rain of infected debris. Ten years later, over seventy percent of the human population is dead and only a handful of cities survive intact. So called ‘Living Cities’. The vast majority of human habitation is abandoned to the undying creatures left mutated through a brutal twist in the infection. Greed and corruption are left hovering over this bleak and brutalized domain and a cosmic horror is now free to infiltrate the remote abandoned corners of the Earth. Above this, the orbital colonies spin within artificial gravity wells, impartial observers, unaffected by the shocking events below. Within this mix the lives of two survivors collide: a renegade intelligence agent and a cold-blooded master of violence, shaping events with their virulent hunger for money and desire to carve their name onto this new world.

Some fan feedback about the cyberpunk horror short story, Oracle.

Subject: Re: Oracle
From: tad.xxxxx@gmail.com
To: cl0venfeet(at)hotmail.com

Ok, the first paragraph totally snagged me. This is pure old school Cyberpunk vibe, [...]. Ohh yes, wish you had been in the Chat back when it was hopping, they all would have raved about you.

This one I want to give you money for, based on the first paragraph, because it just sits ‘right’ in my view of good reading.

The landscape and setting deserves a ton of expansion and edification and made available to everyone that loves to read Cyberpunk.

Time to read more, fanboy gushing turned off for now…

Great feedback from Florida about the short story House of Heavenly Light

Subject: Re: House of Heavenly Light
From: tad.xxxxxx@gmail.com
To: cl0venfeet(at)h0tmail(dot)com

Hi there

[...] Loving what I am reading, very much to my tastes the few stories so far,

[...]

This is from the Yellow Dawn setting, wow I want that book now for sure.

This is a worthy Mythos tale. Worthy.
The central character was fine. The Original Infected and the description of the insides and transformation was excellent, Lake Hali was just ‘right’ in so many ways it about made me smile.

I would personally prefer the ending letter have been left off. A little almost too explanatory.

Note: for what I would consider game oriented fiction, and a first view of Yellow Dawn, and not really being a zombies fan (despite also owning Unhallowed Metropolis) I really like it. It is not gaming fiction like some Magic: The Gathering can get, or the Eberron novels can get.

[...]

Thank You

This is really, really good stuff. I’d go as far to say it’s the best Sci Fi horror I’ve read in ten years. I can’t think of anything that beats it in terms of action, the innovative ideas per page quota is off the chain, the characters are deep and real. Drobna is the best anti-hero in the genre. A total bad ass, he makes Mad Max look like Stephen Fry.

Subject: Re: Killing Candy
To: cl0venfeet(at)h0tmail(dot)com

You know, this is a reminder why I don’t like or trust many people! I think when I move out into my own apartment I’m going to have to hire a ninja assassin to deter the creepy scum of humanity trying to get close to me :P.

Another wonderful snapshot, creepy and disturbing, and again re-enforces distrust and loathing of the human race as a whole and what horrible atrocities we are capable of. If Oracle has got you creeped, I can’t even imagine what that one is going to be like when I read it after this one lol.

Arnos Vale: 3,900 words, full of dread and menace, set within the centuries old cemetery of Arnos Vale in Bristol, England. Arnos Vale is a portal to a world of mist and shadows, where the foolish can stumble upon terrors that should not be and glimpse Nature’s cruel and despicable secrets.

Cloudy Head: 5,000 words, illustrated (black & white). A fabulous tale of two-worlds co-existing and overlapping in secret, special places; populated with mysteries and dangerous entities that exist to help or hinder new dreamers crossing over normally unseen boundaries. Hauntingly engaging, spooky and intriguing, Cloudy Head will stay with you for days.

Corrupt Moon: (Yellow Dawn) 4,200 words. A survivor becomes obsessed by a church tower on a distant hill leading him to an mind-shattering encounter with the Outer Chaos of the Cthulhu Mythos.

Cypher: History has taught us the secrets of the past. But when an object is about to be unearthed after 4,000 years of silence, the revelations it threatens to unleash bring such risk as to draw the most ominous powers from the shadows to try and stop it. Powers that influence the very forces that govern our mundane lives. Cypher is a fast and brutal journey into a heart of darkness.

Dilemma: 6,700 words. Science fiction. A tense and fast-paced plot that plunges into the heart of our fear of the ‘monsters’ we make to serve us. Biological intolerance clashes with the vain attempt to rationalise cold-blooded murder.

Devil’s Spring: 5,000 words. A group of BASE jumpers travel to a remote rural location to enjoy an illicit exit-point; but the area cossets the corruptive remains of a site of worship, where an abominable entity fell from the Stars millennia ago and infected the earth, air and water.  Ignoring the warnings, a swift and brutal tale of cosmic horror unfolds.

Flinch: 5,800 words. Scifi & dark fantasy. Working as a ‘door skimmer’ for the best and most exclusive night clubs in the city has its perks and everyone, it seems, wants a piece of Raymond. Surgical implants give him an edge in the game of privacy and discretion; but not all new technology, he discovers, is designed to be good for the human soul. Flinch – would you let it inside your head?

House of Heavenly Light (Yellow Dawn): 2,000 words, explores the influence of Hastur on the world of Yellow Dawn through the zombie infection.

Killing Candy: 4,500 words. Cyberpunk horror. It’s not strangers you should worry about. It’s their friends.

Masters of Chaos: 3,800 words, Speculative fiction with Cthulhu Mythos undertone. A man contemplates the world around him, taking seemingly meticulous notes of certain random but repeating events. Can he influence the world through such observations? And to what end? When unseen things are scratching at the doors of perception.

Merchant of Oropas: 4,000 words. Science Fiction & Fantasy. In certain cultures, the possession of an object during magical ceremony can infuse it with qualities that cannot be measured or monitored by scientific means. They are said to become like beacons, within the Astral Planes, guiding or warding other worldly spirits with no restrictions of time, or space.

Oracle: 4,300 words. Cyberpunk Horror. A corporate head hunter plans a lucrative extraction job, assisted by an mysterious neural implant he has no memory of receiving. Meanwhile another kind of hunt is taking place – where a man acts upon a violent and disturbing urge.  Somewhere, within this fusion of damaged synapses and scarred nerve endings, there is a link.  Oracle knows.  Oracle sees. Oracle is the question mark and the key.

Pain: 5,400 words. Sci-fi & dark fantasy. A former military PARC pilot is suffering psychological trauma of flashbacks, relentless physical agony and symptoms associated with PTSD. A pariah since media coverage of an atrocity he was involved within, the man’s only salvation is a mysterious Mr Sovitch who wants to exonerate him and prove he is the victim of experiemental combat drugs. Although he’s aware of another agenda being played out the promise of the pain ending acts like a carrot on a stick.

Sim: 5,100 words. Sci-fi & dark fantasy. Sim-weave is a bioware implant that allows users to record, playback or share their own sim-stims. But what happens if you find one downloaded into your brain that has shocking scenes within it … and what if it’s been made to look like you did these things? Guilt and conscience collide with the horror of what lurks in the shadows of sick mind.

The Tainted Moor (Yellow Dawn):  6,700 words. In the North East of England is a place where something so terrible has occurred, that the locals dare only to speak of it as a warning to survivors thinking of going there.  The Tainted Moor.  Man has tried to penetrate the chaos of the Infection and brought such calamity upon the battered Earth that even the Angels weep in despair.  An indelible stain upon the bruised flesh of Mother Nature.

David J Rodger – DATA

Some fan feedback about the science fiction fantasy short story, Killing Candy.

From: Adam Lee
Sent: 03 February 2011 11:00

Subject: Killing candy

Hi,

Killing Candy reminded me of some of the Stephen King short stories. Just a totally creepy atmosphere throughout building up to a shocking ending. I especially liked how Sabria’s character went from super confident when they first met, to very vulnerable when she though she had found someone to trust.

Looking forward to reading more!

¦ dialling in from Sky Bunker ¦

Saturday 19th March 2011. 13:19 GMT.

Just got back from a divine drive into the city – roof down – cool breeze and pre-Spring sunshine.  Did ‘The Walk’ around Harbour. 3 miles.  Did it twice last night after work and planning the same again this afternoon so that’ll be 15 miles and 1,500 calories burned off thank you very much.

Ended the walk outside the Arnolfini Cafe. Grabbed a strong black coffee (and one of their amaaaaazing Old Spot Ham sausage rolls) and a chair outside on the cobblestones and spent an hour sitting there, soaking up the sun, reading Richard Morgan and feeling really blissed out.

I texted a few folk with a message saying as much and got some nice responses; strange to think about the folk actually asleep or up late and partying a few hours West.  And my cousin Age, texting from the Arctic to say he was driving through a heavy snowfall.

Movie poster for Donnie Darko

I watched Donnie Darko again last night. First time since 2003. Man, I forgot what an awesome movie that is.  It’s aging really well.  Though I was all cut-up by the final scene and the track Mad World. Memories of my early teens and a certain situation at home, leading inevitably to me thinking about my parents and how much I miss them.

Could have stayed at the Arnolfini all day but I’ve got work to do. Yellow Dawn overhaul beckons.

About to start another 45 minute da Vinci session.  My polyphasic sleep patterns have been a godsend over the past few weeks, really maxing my creative output either side of a full-time day job.

Right now I’m listening to the uber-cool sounds of Invol2ver album, by Sasha. Memories of 2008 and writing EDGE.

No novel writing for me for a while now though.  I finished two novels last year, Dog Eat Dog and Living in Flames (yet to be released), then January and Feb was a mad frenzy of short stories… 14 shorts in 41 days.

Now I’m getting into the much anticipated overhaul of Yellow Dawn and I’m really enjoying it.  I know the issues with the current version (2.1) and I’m excited by the prospect of resolving them, perfecting the product.

The main objective of the overhaul is to disengage the crunchy rules (dice rolls and tables) from the setting of Yellow Dawn, and to create a lot of background material and narrative to give GMs a better vision of the Yellow Dawn universe.  Equally important is bring more Hastur into the “Age of Hastur“.  Being more upfront about how Hastur has entered the world of Humankind and what that means.

It’s a lot of work, but I’m relishing it.

Enjoy the Ides of March 2011 - get a free short story

Staying on the theme of my writing, I launched a big promotion this month called, “Enjoy The Ides of March” and it’s going really well. Essentially it’s aimed at increasing the volume of fans on Facebook. Ultimate target is 3,000 – which apparently is the magic number to be able to really monetise the Facebook channel, and see fan interest increase organically through the whole social network scene.  Right now though, my target for the end of March is 600 fans.

Basically I’m giving away a short story to anybody who joins my Facebook Fan Page. At the end of the month there’s a free prize draw where I’ll give away a copy of one of my novels, but, and here’s the bait, if I can reach my target of 600 fans, then I’ll give away one COMPLETE collection of novels. That’s worth £80 quid or over $100 dollars.

All the sunshine has given me ample opportunity to go driving my Rocket with the roof down. Even when it’s not sunny I still clamp on a fuzzy hat and grin in the hot air blasting from the dashboard heaters… but there is something really divine about riding along, squinting in the furnace light of the sun.

My life’s been pretty two dimensional for the past few weeks. Work is so insane I can’t even describe it.  Just nuts. And writing has been equally intense.  All good though.  Next month I’m heading over to New York to see Floyd, my publicist out there… we’re spending a weekend up at his retreat in the Catskills, chopping wood, building fires, drinking whisky and plotting my conquering the world.  Plus seeing some exceptionally lovely people I know over there.  May I’m spending a week riding through the mountains of Switzerland on a train, popping 12,000 feet on the Glacier Express to come down into Italy and spend three nights on the shore of Lake Como.  Then June I’m going to heading over to Santiago, in Spain, staying in a medieval monastery.  So some things to look forward to.
