Why even debate? Let’s do this in the UK now!

Fantastic deer-shaped electricity pylon concept by Moscow-based design studio Design DepotMy Russian language skills are non-existent and the Google Translator is a little ambiguous, but the concept appear to be ideas for making Sochi ready for the Winter Olympics.

I don’t mind the appearance of electricity pylons; I always found them rather interesting to look at in a sci-fi, Professor Bernard Quatermass, sort of way.  But I reckon seeing something like these, marching across the landscape would be really thought-provoking.  Different regions could develop particular themes.

One man and a segment of the cosmic sub-conscious

.

Some great photographs by Russian creatives, Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov. Blending myth and mystery to draw your imagination into a narrative of your own making.

.

There is something deeply evocative about these images, only two of a larger collection that defines the collaboration between two Russian creatives Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov – in a project called Private Moon (La luna privada).  Tishkov is renowned in the Moscow art scene for tackling themes of myth through various mediums, and the use of surrealism.  These images tap into that vein but rather than repel the mainstream mind, I think they capture it and lure it deeper into a realm where dream and the questions about reality merge together.  The moon representing the great beacon of the hidden mysteries, an icon of the subconscious – of dreams – the gentle yet intense light can awaken things inside us that often lie dormant (suppressed by the weight of modern life); there are dark fears swirling in the ever-patient darkness but also a great power of healing in that pale luminosity.  It all depends which side of the coin of duality you care to look upon.

Private Moon by Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov Rowing Boat At Night

Private Moon by Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov

The character in the rowing boat could by the mythical boatman there to guide the soul; traditional legends warped and twisted by the modern world, evolving and adapting with change.  Has the boatman found a new role – stowing away a fragment of the feminine godess to journey out from the darkness of the UNKNOWN to reach the shores of some other realm?

.

Private Moon by Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov Snow Covered Forest At Night

Private Moon by Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov

A great forest beckons the travelling boatman on with his prize.  Is the boatman foolhardy or brave?  The forest the final veil of impenetrable mystery where even the full furnace rays of the daytime Sun and the nocturnal tendrils of its cool sister the Moon  cannot probe.

What secrets lie within the shadow-steeped silence of the forest?

Take a peek at the photo galleries of Boris Bendikov and Leonid Tishkov to see the rest of this story unfold.

There’s some wonderful imagery and very much open to thoughtful interpretation.

Esoteric meets Cyberpunk

Here’s two images from Igor Vasiliadis (a photographer based in Moscow) that define the broad scope of his talents.

woman photographed using traditional analogue techniques - dark tonality - artefacts from drying emulsion - silver and cynadide - image copyright Igor Vasiliadis all rights reserved

image copyright Igor Vasiliadis all rights reserved

The first image is steeped in old-world atmosphere and could be something from the realm of Brian Lumley’s Necroscope Wamphyri series – a Sunsider snapped in a rare moment of candour before night falls and the horrors sweep across the landscape from Starside.  Or the woman could be an adept of the esoteric traditions circulating throughout Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  A reader of Tarot cards; a holder of séance and mouth-piece of the spirits.  It’s an image born of techniques from a bygone era; very long exposures, silver and cyanide, of patience in the art and craft of one single image. The rushing pressure wave of the 21st century has long blown past, giving the figure in the image the time to step out, to emerge from the darkness of deep tonality and emulsion, to bare the very essence of who she is for this moment in Time.

It’s a great picture and if you check out Igor Vasiliadis’ website you’ll discover a heap more.

The second image is in total contrast.

This is the layered structures of late-21st century fashion and wearable technology.  A fusion of Eastern culture – brought into the global corporate clans through steel-chorded financial muscle.  It’s a glimpse of the sometimes surreal and often imposing flavour of Cyberpunk.

Photography ¦ submission and sex games - the naked skill of Igor Vasiliadis

Image by Igor Vasiliadis – All Rights Reserved

This is a great image from the highly accomplished and experimental Moscow based photographer Igor Vasiliadis.  It immediately weaves some stark and intriguing story possibilities into your mind; sex games and the roles of sub, dom and voyeur.  Of course, it could equally plunge a little further into the realm of dark art if you consider that the centre-posed figure is not taking part in this with any sort of free-will.  What is the distant male figure expecting to observe?  His relaxed posture speaks of a boredom with the mundane pleasures of life – a killer or thug who’s sensitivity has been dulled and blunted by repeated exposure to the visceral highs of violence and danger. Or is he just a bored businessman looking to satisfy shadowy sexual desires that some men can’t exorcise with their pretty wives?  There’s certainly a sense of mystery within the glossy and brightly lit image; shadows that are more off-camera than in-shot.  I’d strongly recommend you check out Igor Vasiliadis’ website, there’s some fantastic images brought into enigmatic life with silver and cyanide.

Iron Man Project - a cyberpunk thriller by British sci-fi cyberpunk author David J Rodger

Available in paperback or kindle

Paperback : from LULU & kindle: US ($), UK (£), DE (Euro)

IRON MAN PROJECT { novel } Ex-special forces man, Vincent Brent, is tough, ruthless and highly trained; he’s now using his skills for whoever will pay him without cashing in the bounty on his head. In this world of the near future, the UN has failed. Wars are fought in boardrooms through attorneys and politics, and on our streets with private armies of military or criminal assets. In Sicily, the Chief of Security for one such corporate alliance struggles to survive as hidden forces attempt to manipulate him for their own ends. Both these men find their fates intertwined. In the cross-hairs of powerful adversaries, they must both make decisions of life and death in a choice between command and conscience. David J Rodger’s trademark unforgiving rendering of brutal reality, and relentless narrative pace, are here in palm-sweating abundance, delivered in a complex novel that will keep you turning pages until the end.

Cyberpunk art ¦ future fashion or post-apocalyptic decadence - photography by Danil Golovkin

Future fashion or post-apocalyptic decadence? Photography by Danil Golovkin – All Rights Reserved

Part of a series of images from the liquid metal, carbo-plastic, hydrogel and permacrete core of visual creators on the Internet.  Images that stir my senses and evoke plots and concepts for what I’d like to see (or fear) in the future.

Danil Golovkin is a Russian fashion photographer who has a spectacular eye for detail.  These images come from a series that he calls Garbage Reign.  For me, these characters could fit very easily into a decadent post-apocalyptic scenario, where the “top of the pile” survivors perpetuate the same-old human instincts of social isolation and exclusion through fashion – are you a part of the club?  Equally as much this is pure cyberpunk, figures who float through the parties held by one of the corporate dynasties, members of the social elite or grifters waiting for the moment to move in on their mark.  Certainly these are images good enough to inspire a myriad of ideas.

Dog Eat Dog - sci-fi dark fantasy novel set in the post-apocalyptic cthulhu mythos horror universe of Yellow Dawn

Paperback : from LULU & kindle: US ($), UK (£), DE (Euro)

DOG EAT DOG { novel } takes place in the near future, after the Earth has been devastated by a viral pathogen unleashed when a corporate cargo hauler crashed into the atmosphere; breaking up as a fireball across the sky, it showered Southern Europe and North Africa with a deadly rain of infected debris. Ten years later, over seventy percent of the human population is dead and only a handful of cities survive intact. So called ‘Living Cities’. The vast majority of human habitation is abandoned to the undying creatures left mutated through a brutal twist in the infection. Greed and corruption are left hovering over this bleak and brutalized domain and a cosmic horror is now free to infiltrate the remote abandoned corners of the Earth. Above this, the orbital colonies spin within artificial gravity wells, impartial observers, unaffected by the shocking events below. Within this mix the lives of two survivors collide: a renegade intelligence agent and a cold-blooded master of violence, shaping events with their virulent hunger for money and desire to carve their name onto this new world.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space 50 years ago today; watch a reconstruction of his epic journey in this beautifully shot film by Christopher Riley.  The bulk of the film was shot in space on board the International Space Station, giving you – as an observer – a fantastic experience of an orbit around the Earth.  It blends the contemporary footage with real-time audio from Gagarin’s original mission, underpinned by a lovely musical score by Philip Sheppard.

Enjoy!

Bears discovered eating corpses in Russian graveyards

Image from Guardian.Co.Uk

From a distance it resembled a rather large man in a fur coat, leaning tenderly over the grave of a loved one. But when the two women in the Russian village of Vezhnya Tchova came closer they realised there was a bear in the cemetery eating a body.
