Other News

I finished a new novel earlier this week. The Black Lake.  Now going through proofing and review.  So far, great feedback… it’s a fast read with the tension building up nicely.  I’m aiming to release it before September 2012.

I’m now working on the next novel.  Rise of the Iconoclast.  Another one to be set in the world of Yellow Dawn.  A rip-roaring romp of post-apocalyptic cyborgs, holding together as a bandit crew and heroes for hire. Very different to what I normally write. But I like the challenge.  I’ve got my crew defined and relevant bits fleshed out – so watch this space for updates as the story evolves.

Dog Eat Dog takes place in the near future, after the Earth has been devastated by a viral pathogen unleashed when a corporate cargo hauler crashed into the atmosphere; breaking up as a fireball across the sky, it showered Southern Europe and North Africa with a deadly rain of infected debris. Ten years later, over seventy percent of the human population is dead and only a handful of cities survive intact. So called ‘Living Cities’. The vast majority of human habitation is abandoned to the undying creatures left mutated through a brutal twist in the infection. Greed and corruption are left hovering over this bleak and brutalized domain and a cosmic horror is now free to infiltrate the remote abandoned corners of the Earth. Above this, the orbital colonies spin within artificial gravity wells, impartial observers, unaffected by the shocking events below. I’d go as far to say it’s the best Sci Fi horror I’ve read in ten years. I can’t think of anything that beats it in terms of action, the innovative ideas per page quota is off the chain, the characters are deep and real. Drobna is the best anti-hero in the genre. A total bad ass, he makes Mad Max look like Stephen Fry.

Conversation: my latest novel, Dog Eat Dog, sci-fi & dark fantasy gets a second reading.

I don’t often get to meet the people who buy my work.  Partly because I’m a UK author in a global market place; I get fan mail from Europe, the US and even as far away as Japan.  One person I do know about, however, I met this weekend and is one of those fiercely knowledgeable types that gives any writer the heebie-jeebies.

Chris Halliday has a voracious appetite for books, graphic novels and RPG supplements; if there’s anything to know about science fiction, dark fantasy, the Cthulhu Mythos and its spin-offs, then Chris not only knows about it but typically has a very strong opinion about it.

So when he casually dropped into our conversation, “Oh, I re-read your last novel again. Dog Eat Dog,” I experienced a moment of blood cooling in my veins as my heart took pause.  Now is not the time I want to hear a bad critique about a major piece of work that’s been out in the market for 8 months, especially as I’m currently up to my eyeballs in the overhaul of Yellow Dawn.

However, the words that followed were an utter delight; good enough to polish and wear with pride. Hence this wee post here.  In his solemn version of enthusiasm Chris stated that he’d forgotten just how tense and unrelenting the story was, and that the very end was possibly one of the finest moments of gruesome, drawn-out, nerve-jangling character demise he’s had the pleasure of reading.

Or something to that effect.

So, in a nutshell, a massive thumbs-up for the book, considering where the opinion is coming from.  Plus another confidence boosting pill and hopefully an incentive for you to give it a whirl.  Ahem.

I found these folks and like the cut of their jib, so to speak.  They’re an online distribution hub for cool gems of the physical universe.  I know how hard it is to get noticed as a small player in the vast sprawl of the online realm, so here’s a little green flag from me to you to say take a peek if you’re into collecting books, games or sheet music from the physical world.

 

We are based in Salem, Oregon. Our goal is to provide quality books, DVDs, VHS tapes, & vintage board games w/quality customer service. We have been selling online – through various venues – since 2000.
