Fantasy Author Fran Jacobs

If you’re in Bristol on Saturday 23rd Feb, pop along to the fantastically atmospheric, eclectic and bohemian collection of indoor stalls at St Nicholas Market.  Lunartique, 47 Exchange Avenue, will be hosting the author of fantasy novels The Seer’s Tower and The Shadow Seer, Fran Jacobs, as she does a reading of her work.

@ 13.30 HRS.

St Nicholas Market is a wonderful historical location, crammed to the corners with interesting stalls, artisans and nick-nacks. It’s also the prime setting for the science fiction dark fantasy novel by David J Rodger - Living in Flames – which takes place almost exclusively in Bristol.

Classic Realms of Adventure

This is one of the real delights of the Interweb. Encountering positive, enthusiastic and like-minded people.

One such chap is Wes, who has been shouldering a lot of effort and stress as he single-handedly creates a new online resource for gamers, with a helpful slant towards folks who are new to RPGs and gaming in general. All of this from over four decades of experience and a jaw-dropping spread of different game types and systems.

There’s a healthy adoration of all things Lovecraftian, too.

Classic Realms of Adventure is the umbrella site, folding in several strands such as a YouTube channel, Darkness over Dunwich (my favourite, of course) and some old-school war-gaming joy mixed in with board games.

So if that whets your appetite then please step through the portal into a different land.

Photography ¦ submission and sex games - the naked skill of Igor Vasiliadis

Image by Igor Vasiliadis – All Rights Reserved

This is a great image from the highly accomplished and experimental Moscow based photographer Igor Vasiliadis.  It immediately weaves some stark and intriguing story possibilities into your mind; sex games and the roles of sub, dom and voyeur.  Of course, it could equally plunge a little further into the realm of dark art if you consider that the centre-posed figure is not taking part in this with any sort of free-will.  What is the distant male figure expecting to observe?  His relaxed posture speaks of a boredom with the mundane pleasures of life – a killer or thug who’s sensitivity has been dulled and blunted by repeated exposure to the visceral highs of violence and danger. Or is he just a bored businessman looking to satisfy shadowy sexual desires that some men can’t exorcise with their pretty wives?  There’s certainly a sense of mystery within the glossy and brightly lit image; shadows that are more off-camera than in-shot.  I’d strongly recommend you check out Igor Vasiliadis’ website, there’s some fantastic images brought into enigmatic life with silver and cyanide.

science fiction cthulhu mythos short story by cyberpunk horror author David J Rodger - Masters of Chaos - favourite read of 2011

Available as PDF download, eBook or paperback

2011 has been an insanely busy year for me. Promoting the new novel Dog Eat Dog (first to be set in the post-apocalyptic Cthulhu Mythos infected world of Yellow Dawn – The Age of Hastur), then hammering out 14 short stories in a 40 day frenzy and now deep into a nine month overhaul of Yellow Dawn to create the new version 2.5 (due out Summer 2012).

Out of all this creativity I set myself a challenge of selecting one as my favourite for the year.

A tough choice but “Masters of Chaos” is the one I’m going for.

Speculative fiction. A man contemplates the world around him, taking seemingly meticulous notes of certain random but repeating events. Can he influence the world through such observations? And to what end? When unseen things are scratching at the doors of perception.

It’s 3,800 words, fairly meaty for a short story and uses an unusual narrative style that, in my head at least, is based on  the awesome narrative monologue method used in the film Pi by Darren Aronofsky. It charts the last days of the Earth during the esoteric experimentation by somebody who has stumbled into the surreal realm of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.

I think it would make a great short film.

The story generated a lot of praise and positive feedback from fans.

My initial reaction is one of surprise and awe. The structure is fresh and original. I think it has the potential to be something great. A very fruitful young seed that could germinate into something much larger and very successful for you.

On its own this video is pretty interesting; some clever Danes (Fysikshow Aarhus) sets up a table rigged with a steady flow of flammable gas passing over it and a music loudspeaker nearby. The various frequencies create some pleasing displays of varying modal patterns, in some cases, causing the burning gas to coalesce into “balls of fire”.  Made me think about the Magic Users of fantasy fiction and role-playing games; in particular the ability to conjure fireballs out of thin-air and fling them at adversaries.  I’m currently working on the Occult & (Cthulhu) Mythos chapter for the new version of  Yellow Dawn  – The Age of Hastur, that I’m due to launch next year.  For me, I like the concept of road mages who master the art of creating unique, magickal “sounds” combined with focussed thought to generate powerful effects.  For many this is a shocking display of supernatural ability, of metaphysical talents; for the road mage it’s merely grasping what’s already out there but what most minds (lost within the mundane world of materialism and avarice) fail to see.  What many don’t realise is that beyond the realm of the Occult is another far more vast level of power; the hideous, corrupting and cosmic horror of the Mythos where Magick has the ability to permanently change fragments of our reality.  Praise the Elder Ones for the Quantisphere!

Enjoy the video.

Oopart - Hades - Cover Art- Cyberpunk Fantasy

Sleeve Art for Oopart - Hades (Original Mix)

This is a blend of music and art, and of Cyberpunk and Fantasy.

The image could easily fit into a Fantasy Fiction scene but I don’t think it would be out of place in some near-future virt, or a far flung future where technology and society had evolved to a point where civillisation is barely human, technology is like magick, and society is closer to what we’d recognise as medieval than some shiny Star Trek (not a dig) utopia.

I’ve typically held the view that cyberpunk is “what’s coming tomorrow”, but this image has opened my thoughts to the idea of applying cyberpunk more as a meme than a period of history. So for me, thought-provoking stuff. A nice little spin away from the core of my traditional thinking patterns.

And meanwhile, the reason I found this image.

A tune.

Just read “merchants” . Such a weird and wonderful tale , a nice break from your regular program of hellish beasts and demonic tech. :)

Quite romantic .  Felt a little dune-esque. Loved the squid.  Lovely story man.  A fucking xxxxxx  ending too.   You better have a lie down lol.

Really enjoyable. No criticism.

Oh. I liked the reason behind the monks keeping the xxxxxx  as opposed to xxxxxx – it reminds them of xxxxxx.  Cool.

Nice, very nice. I have occassionally wondered what another Dreamlands might be like.If I had ever imagined my own. Now I have a new dreamlands to contemplate and I like it. Not a bad story at all. It did end almost a little abruptly, I could not discern the root words for the Sea God’s name, seemed like you had used America and Europe as the root words for the two main lands. Good lead character there as well. Being an avid reader I liked him being a Librarian.

The ending was appropriate and fit in nicely. One thing I like about your stories, you do not always close all the loopholes or answer all the questions.

Thanks

David J. Rodger (born 1970 in Newcastle Upon Tyne) is a British science fiction & fantasy author and game designer best known for his novels set in a near-future world of corporate and political intrigue. So far he has published five novels; four that are set in the same world: God Seed; Dante’s Fool; Iron Man Project and Edge, and one, Dog Eat Dog, set within the post-apocalyptic world of Yellow Dawn.

Picture of scifi & dark fantasy writer David J RodgerI’m not claiming that my experience and advice is in any way special or unique; but it’s real, from the heart and is how I pushed through all the barriers to achieve my dreams.  So here’s 10 top tips that you hopefully find useful.  I’d like to think that some of them help nudge your writing  from aspiration through to inspiration.

- David J Rodger, Bristol (2011)

1: Work Hard & Prosper

Feel you need to give up your job and escape the tyranny of a relationship before you can follow your passion to write?  Maybe you do but those are quite drastic actions and typically people don’t take them – leaving them living their lives with frustrated dreams.  I have a full time job, an all consuming relationship and I still make time to write.  I wake up most days between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. and use those silent hours to be creative.  I write during my lunch break at work.  And I write every night between 7p.m. and 9 p.m., sticking to a golden rule of “no computer work after 9 p.m.” meaning I can actually get some time with my lady, and get some time to sleep.  So on average I score between 2 to 5 hours of writing time every single day.  On weekends it’s more.   My writing is a job; one that I love despite there being moments when I curse the day the Muse touched my mind.  If you put in the hours and never give up on your dreams – you can achieve anything.

2: Treat your work as a product

If there’s something wrong with a piece of writing, you need to know before you can launch it to the mass market.  Build a small group of people who you trust to give you honest, critical feedback.  Listen to their nit-picks and act on those you consider relevant, and ignore those you don’t.

3: Be consistent and persistent

Light a fire in your imagination and build up a head of steam.  If you have great ideas – even small ones – write them down and follow them through.  Always keep a notebook handy so you can jot ideas down – and review these jottings from time to time so you don’t less those ideas slip into the vast and sad pool of forgotten gems.  Set yourself goals and stick to them. Write every day. Even if it’s just half an hour.  Review your ideas regularly.  Map out a plan of action for PR and marketing, then review, adjust and respond to it – and never give up.  Writing a novel is hard – but getting people to part with their money to buy it is even harder.   Every time you falter and allow weeks or months to slide by whilst your ideas and plans stagnate, you’re wasting the most precious resource on Earth – you.

4: Create boundaries and guard them jealously

Life outside work with all its trials and tribulations, from partners and kids, to laundry and catching up on your favourite show or seeing friends, can swell to consume your time. Create boundaries by setting aside “me time”.  Slots when your first priority is to write.  Enforce a lock-down during these periods… ignoring everything and everyone that tries to interrupt you. And be rude about it: they’ll soon get the message.  It’s your life and your time and nobody has the right to intrude upon you working on your dreams.

5: Know where your character is “at” before you start each chapter

Answer these questions when you first create your character for the novel or story you’re writing; and then repeat the process in less detail before you start any difficult chapters.

WHO AM I?
EVERY OTHER DETAIL – EVEN STAR SIGN AND EYE COLOUR

WHERE AM I?
IN THE WORLD, IN MY LIFE?

WHAT TIME IS IT?
WHAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN

WHAT DO I WANT – to achieve?

WHY DO I WANT THIS?

HOW AM I GOING TO GET WHAT I WANT?

6: Accept that your first novel will likely never be published

But you still need to write it.  Ever had somebody say to you, “Everyone has a novel inside of them!”  Sure, but who wants to read it?   Use your first novel as the training ground and a place to expunge all your personality traits; eventually, wrap the MS up in a plastic bag and stash it in a cupboard.

7:  Be organised

Create a central repository for all facts about the world of your story and the people and characters in it.  Give it an index that makes it easy to find particular details.  Helps prevent you flicking through your MS trying to remember what colour your hero’s eyes are.

8: Be realistic about your business model

Did you forget you’re just a product?  Don’t spend money unless you’re confident of a return on that investment.  The best way to be certain of a return is to build up interest in your work – start small and work up from there.

9: Press Releases and Promotion

Consolidate and capitalise on success.  Even minor ones.  Each and every time something goes your way, you make a tiny breakthrough – or a significant one – every time you get a positive review about your work, tell the world about it.  Write a little snippet on your blog – load it with SEO friendly keywords relevant to your genre, and fire it out.  Most importantly, have somewhere you can stockpile all these snippets of goodness so that you can demonstrate it to punters, agents, publishers or even movie moguls taking an interest in your words and worlds.

10: Be honest and be humble

Shout about your work with pride but don’t ram it down everyone’s throat. And don’t blow out hot air with the pungent aroma of BS.  Just tell it how it is.  Even when things go wrong or you pick up some negative feedback, talk about it… show that you’re willing to listen and adapt your work to improve it.  Your work might be a product, but your struggles to produce it creates a very human story.

So far he has published five novels; four set in the same world: God Seed; Dante’s Fool; Iron Man Project and Edge, and one, Dog Eat Dog, set in the post-apocalyptic world of Yellow Dawn.

Yellow Dawn is a role-playing game set in the same future world as his novels, ten years after it has been devastated by a terrible mutagenic virus. Rodger’s novels often combine high-tech intrigue and political/corporate machinations with elements of the Cthulhu Mythos, as created by H.P. Lovecraft. Rodger’s contributions to the Mythos include the creation of a new Great Old One in his novel Edge, and the use of the Outer God Nyarlathotep in the novel God Seed. In Yellow Dawn Rodger’s interpretation of the Mythos, in particular the Great Old One Hastur, is a major part of the background material. Rodger has recently published Shadows of the Quantinex, a large-scale campaign expansion for the Yellow Dawn game.

Rodger has also written Cloudy Head, a children’s story illustrated by Kenn-Ole Moen, and Murder at Sharky Point, a murder mystery game. Rodger spent 8 years working for a non-departmental government agency, developing a virtual communications service within the IT Division, before moving into commercial project management for a UK media company. In 2000 Rodger’s presence on the Internet got him a place in the BBC documentary Through The Eyes of the Young, directed by Chris Terrill.

Previous Winners

The winner for November 2010 is Alexandre Siegelin (Germany).

The previous time I ran a free giveaway was July 2009. The winner then was Christopher Clark Plambeck

The winner was a very nice chap called Christopher Clark Plambeck from the US, who selected “God Seed” as his prize. He admitted that he participated in the contest to get his hands on the RPG “Yellow Dawn” and was thrown into a paroxysm of indecision when he realised the choice of novels available. Made me smile. Thanks to Chris for the extra fans he generated.

Please Note:

I’ll only consider entries made during the prize-draw month.

Best of luck and thank you for your support.

As I launch Dog Eat Dog, the first novel to be set within the post-apocalyptic world of Yellow Dawn; I’m releasing my back catalogue of novels set in the shared universe of the world before the cataclysmic events of Yellow Dawn take place.  As a sweetner, I’m offering some tasty discounts on the normal publisher price.  The second chunk of new fiction to be re-released is the complex cyberpunk thriller: Iron Man Project.

IRON MAN PROJECT: In British military intelligence, deniable operators are tools of the trade and their most expendable asset.  Getting caught is not an option, but that’s what happened to ex-special forces man, Vincent Brent.  Expelled by his community, the legal gears of a court-marshal grinding away in his wake, he’s had to ditch his life and keep low.  Tough, resourceful, ruthless and highly trained, he’s now using his skills for whoever will pay him without cashing in the bounty on his head: at this moment that means a shitty life of protecting prostitutes and drug-dealers on the streets of Marseilles.

In this world of the near future, the UN has failed and big corporations have muscled their way into the seat of global power through a network of alliances, called UTOC.  Wars are fought in boardrooms through attorneys and politics, and on our streets with private armies of military or criminal assets.  In Sicily, the Chief of Security for one such corporate alliance struggles to survive a subtle campaign of corruption, blackmail, physical violence and murder, as hidden forces attempt to manipulate him for their own ends.

Both these men find their fates intertwined.  In the cross-hairs of powerful adversaries, they must both make decisions of life and death in a choice between command and conscience.

David J Rodger’s trademark unforgiving rendering of brutal reality, and relentless narrative pace, are here in palm-sweating abundance, delivered in a complex novel where corporations become characters and people are merely pawns in a bigger game.

Dante's Fool a cyberpunk horror with demonic entities bond to Outer Gods of Cthulhu MythosLondon, the near future, a courier who’s just descended from orbit is intercepted by armed-robbers on a busy motorway.  The robbers get away with the package but it’s not what they expected and leads to an enigmatic deep-space mining corporation hunting them down, with brutal consequences.  Also tracking them down is a hard-nosed Detective Sergeant from the Metropolitan Serious Crimes Division.  The case lands in his lap when the police computer system concludes there is a link between the robbery and an on-going case he’s investigating: the ritualistic mutilation and murder of men and woman by perpetrators who appear to be fulfilling some kind of occult ceremony.

What happens next is a journey through a personal Hell, as the Detective discovers there are forces out there that will do anything to see him fail, and entities that exist beyond the ordinary planes of mundane reality.  He doesn’t just have to fight to succeed and survive; he has to risk his very soul.  Shocking revelations follow betrayal and bloodshed.  Nothing will ever be the same again.

Within this hunt, one woman becomes the focus: the daughter of a wealthy movie industry icon who has long turned to designer drugs and crime.  She becomes the key to unlocking the biggest secret of all.  The identity and motives behind a seemingly god-like computer hacker: Dante.

David J Rodger’s trademark unforgiving rendering of harsh reality, and relentless narrative pace, are here in palm-sweating abundance, delivered in a novel that focuses an uncomfortable light on the demonic entities that cling to our indulgent existence – and their bonds with the nameless Outer Gods of the Cthulhu Mythos.

I’d like to bring to your attention to some new non-fiction: The Evolution of Fantasy Role-Playing Games by Michael J. Tresca. It’s looks like an interesting read although I’ve not been able to find any reviews or see a glimpse of the content.  If you’ve read it or have any insight then I’d love to hear from you.

Book Description:

“Tracing the evolution of fantasy gaming from its origins in tabletop war and collectible card games to contemporary web-based live action and massive multi-player games, this book examines the archetypes and concepts within the fantasy gaming genre alongside the roles and functions of the game players themselves. Other topics include: how The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings helped shape fantasy gaming through Tolkien’s obsessive attention to detail and virtual world building; the community-based fellowship embraced by players of both play-by-post and persistent browser-based games, despite the fact that these games are fundamentally solo experiences; the origins of gamebooks and interactive fiction; and the evolution of online gaming in terms of technological capabilities, media richness, narrative structure, coding authority, and participant roles.”

Dog Eat Dog a post-apocalyptic thriller horror written by David J Rodger¦ dialling in from the Sky Bunker ¦

07:37 GMT, Thursday 4th November. Sat at my desk, a churning mix of blue sky and ragged dark clouds are throwing stormy light in through the glass canopy behind me.  Life support is blowing warm air across my bare legs; I’m wrapped in the woolly embrace of Starsky and have a big mug of strong tea beside me.  Clan of Xymox is playing by choice, on vinyl, conjuring memories of a life and a world 21 years and 320 miles distant.

I’m enjoying a moment of relative quiet and calm. I’ve got a potentially tough few days ahead of me.

Yesterday, 3rd November, I published my fifth novel, Dog Eat Dog is born.  A new release in science fiction & fantasy.  Very much a soft launch.  New fiction: a story set within the post-apocalyptic world of Yellow Dawn.  There are zombies although within the story, the term is seen as a misnomer generated by popular media of survivors.  And, as with much of my writing, there’s a far reaching influence of some Cthulhu Mythos nasty: a Great-Old-One and Servitor Race combination I created  for the Yellow Dawn world. I’ve not seen a copy of the book yet so I’m trusting it’s a-okay.  Should get to see it next week. Meanwhile, press release here

So that’s all good.

But, I’m approaching anniversary of my mum dying, or rather, of watching the final days of my mum starving to death.  I’ve been fending off memories that have been bubbling up over the past few days, shoving them back down with a mental force of will, but I reckon very soon it’s going to hit me full force. Pretty grim. And a horrible reminder of the massive gap that has been created in my life by her absence.

I’m also starting to read the blog entries I made during the whole experience this time last year.  Part of the process, I guess. Rememberance.

I’m flying to Newcastle tonight.  Part of me is saying, WTF! Why are you going?  There’s a family home of 30+ years with the guts, heart and soul ripped out of it. An empty vessel that’s just going to be a freezing and haunting remdinder of everything that’s now gone. Hmm.

There are friends there.  Good friends.  So that’s why I’m going.

And to build and burn a bonfire with Pete, next door.  Those who know me will know why, and know the story.

So Dog Eat Dog is done and dusted.  Lots of marketing ahead which I’ve started and am enjoying; actually reaching out to people, to humans, and saying “hello” rather than being tucked away inside this room at the top of a house with a lofty view of a city and rolling hills.

I’m going to delay launching Living In Flames, the novel I wrote between July and September this year.

It means I’ll soon be able to turn my attention back to Yellow Dawn. I’ve been scouring RPG forums and blogs looking for critiques on the game, to help me build up a  bug list of things I need to improve. Found a fantastic one by Mornwraith on RPGNet yesterday. I’m hoping to approach some people on UK Roleplayers and my long time favourite Yog-Sothoth dot com.  I’m also looking for people to support my vision and carry it forward, out into the blogosphere and the wider web beyond.  So busy months ahead. It you’re into Yellow Dawn and want to monitor progress with the next stage, then bookmark this link, and please feel free to participate.

Talking of zombies. I went to Bristol’s Zombie Walk last weekend. The Dead Will Rise. Bloody excellent. I think there was about 3,000 zombies turned up. Pics and videos (including a great one of zombies dancing to a zombie rock band playing Ghostbusters theme) on this link here.

Braiinnsssss

Finally, I’m giving away some of my work at the end of the month. If you want to grab a chance to win, follow this link.

That’s it.
