Midnight, 12th September, YD+10
The team have just met with Jon Whitlock. They also meet Vince, one of Old Man Barnes’ labourers, and somebody who’ll be working with Luke digging that ditch.
They walk back to Barnes’ barn, and get a good night sleep in the bales of straw and hay.
13th September
An early start. Luke decides to not let down old man Barnes, and so stays to dig the ditch. Vince, on the other hand, is sick and tired of the physical labour and so joins Jacob and Fenris, walking down into town to Charlotte’s dad’s place, to find Jason.
“Is she going to see you again?” Charlotte’s dad asks Jason.
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. That’s real good, son.”
Leaving town the heavy and low cloud cover begins to darken, and then a cool breeze springs up as the pressure drops and a storm sweeps in. An hour later, dragging their heels to keep in pace with the slow and ambling Jacob they reach the precarious wooden bridge crossing the gorge; by now the rain is coming down so hard they can see barely 20 metres at times.
Eventually they reach Jon Whitlocks place. They meet and become close to his two children, Adam and Jessie. They talk with Mark, Jon’s handyman / henchman.
Later that morning they head up to Old Ed Norris shack… a threatening unwelcome until Jason shows his holstered gun and intimidates the man into a nervous wreck. Fenriss fell over a couple of times and sadly, lost his gun, somewhere on the mountain.
They meet the Seward family, authoritarian dad, two big sons and a meek wife.
Vince heads into town and talks Ann, the former housekeeper for Whitlocks into coming back to work next day (she’s due to start 14th Sept). He gets some nice cookies.
In the late afternoon they head over to the Bensten House, to see Sam the caretaker. The massive place is boarded up, and Sam’s cottage is locked. Jason has a snoop, finds an open window and clambers in; finds women’s clothing and a diary. Leaving, they encounter Sam heading back from a long walk: he’s calm, polite and a bit slow.
The team start heading back… reading the diary as they go… and discover disturbing secrets. Jacob wants them to turn back and go do something, but the others disagree, “let’s read the diary first.”
Back at the Whitlocks, Jason reads young Jessie and her brother Adam a bedtime story.
Downstairs, everyone waits til Jon retires, then it’s a long night of reading the diary in the kitchen… dark secrets emerge…
A CRASH from upstairs, like a window exploding, a child’s scream…. Abruptly choked off with a gruesome sound; then an animal like shrieking of “something”…. The floorboards banging and rattling and then silence.
Jacob charges outside….everyone else heads upstairs.
A wardrobe toppled and pushed to block door.
Adam is gone. Blood everywhere.
Jacob can’t find any tracks. “This is wrong, this is wrong,” he keeps muttering, “This doesn’t make any sense.”
RESUME: 1AM, 14th Sept
The team decide to head over to the Bensten House.
Jacob is going to take Jon Whitlock and Jessie over to Seward place…
